St. Nicholas Orthodox Naval Cathedral

Majestic, radiant and rich in stories – St. Nicholas Orthodox Naval Cathedral is the main visual and spiritual landmark of Karosta. It is one of the largest and most magnificent Orthodox cathedrals in Latvia and the tallest domed building in all of the Baltics, whose impressive golden domes vividly contrast with the Soviet-era multi-storey panel apartment blocks built around it.

Construction of the church began in 1901 according to the design of the renowned Saint Petersburg architect Vasily Kosyakov, and the solemn ceremony of consecrating the foundation stone was attended by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia himself, together with his family and nobles. The cathedral was built for the needs of the Russian Imperial Navy and consecrated in 1903.

Unique architecture and construction

The cathedral is an outstanding example of 17th-century Russian Orthodox church architecture (Byzantine style), yet it possesses a unique engineering feature:

• Without supporting columns: It is a unique structure – there is not a single column inside the cathedral! In its construction, the architect used the monolithic concrete casting method for the first time. The entire enormous mass of the five domes (symbolising Jesus Christ and the four apostles) is held up by four intersecting arch vaults.

• Abundance of light and space: Thanks to the absence of columns and the large windows, the interior of the church is remarkably spacious and bright, and the service is excellently visible from any place in the church.
