Northern Pier
Ziemeļu mols, Karosta, Liepāja, 3414
A place where you can literally step into the heart of the Baltic Sea and stand face to face with the Liepāja wind! The Northern Pier is one of the most impressive and most-visited engineering structures in the city. This gigantic hydrotechnical construction was built at the end of the 19th century as part of the Liepāja Naval Fortress and the Karosta military base complex. The pier's main task, then and now, is to protect the waters of Liepāja Port from strong western winds and drifting sands.
The pier is just under 1.8 kilometres long and just under 10 metres wide, reaching deep into the sea. It is a unique place where the city's industrial and military heritage meets the harsh, majestic and untamed power of nature.
