St. Anne's Church

St. Anne's Church is the oldest place of worship in the city, first mentioned in written sources back in 1587. Originally it was a wooden building, but its current majestic appearance – a red-brick neo-Gothic form with an almost 60-metre-high, slender tower – was created at the end of the 19th century thanks to the reconstruction carried out by the famous chief architect of Liepāja, Max Paul Bertschy.

St. Anne's Church is not only an important spiritual centre but also an architectural and artistic monument of national significance, preserving unique cultural gems from the Baroque era.

A world-class masterpiece – the carved wooden altar

Upon entering the church, your gaze is literally drawn to and your breath taken away by its grand and splendid altar:

• A triumph of Baroque art: It is an impressive wooden altar, 5.8 metres wide and 9.7 metres high, created in 1697 by the outstanding wood sculptor Nicolaus Söffrens (the Younger).

• Fine details and scenes: The altar is one of the most outstanding Baroque wood-carving masterpieces in all of Eastern Europe. It depicts several sculptural groups and biblical scenes with incredibly fine detail, preserved through the centuries.
