Monument to Fallen Fishermen and Sailors

A visually striking and emotionally powerful monument gazing out over the vast expanse of the Baltic Sea. The Monument to Fallen Sailors and Fishermen (unveiled in 1977) is one of Liepāja's most significant memorial sites. Its architectural ensemble is dedicated to all those brave men whose lives and fates have been claimed by the harsh depths of the sea since the city's earliest days.

The monument's creators – sculptor Alberts Terpilovskis and architect Gunārs Asaris – produced a monumental work of art made of steel and concrete. Its central figure is that of a woman in folk costume raised upon a high wave. With her hand lifted, she casts a protective gaze into the distance, symbolizing the mothers, wives and daughters who wait eternally on the shore for their loved ones to return.
