Among the many sites of Karosta, the Liepāja coastal artillery battery No. 2 remains the most mysterious place in Liepāja.
Unlike the Northern Forts, Battery No. 2 was built further from the shoreline and protected by a high defensive rampart. Sixteen 11-inch (280 mm) mortars of the 1877 model were intended to provide its defence. Battery No. 2 was consistently used as an ammunition depot for the armed forces of the various ruling powers. Because of the risk of explosion, the area was a highly restricted-access site for 130 years, closed to the public and strictly guarded.
The building complex of Coastal Battery No. 2 has fully preserved its historic charm and architectural scale. A separate part of the exhibition gives a brief insight into the work of the 1st Kurzeme Division headquarters in 1919–1940. The exhibition features reproductions of historical photographs from the Latvian War Museum about the 1st Liepāja Infantry Regiment, the 2nd Ventspils Infantry Regiment and the Kurzeme Artillery Regiment.
Visitors are admitted to the grounds of Liepāja coastal artillery battery No. 2 only with a guide — at 11.00; 12.00; 13.00; 14.00; 15.00 and 16.00.
