Liepāja's Holy Trinity Cathedral (built between 1742 and 1758) is one of the most magnificent and impressive churches in Latvia and an outstanding monument of late Baroque and Rococo architecture throughout the Baltics. Originally built for the German Lutheran congregation, today this majestic building is the cathedral of the Liepāja Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia.
The cathedral's exterior captivates with its monumental clock tower, but its true splendour lies within. Upon entering the church, the eye is met with a breathtaking interior featuring exquisite wood carvings, gilding and the lavish ducal box, testifying to the city's former wealth and high level of culture.
A World-Class Treasure – The Organ
The cathedral's greatest and most famous pride is its organ. It is the largest mechanical organ in the world that has been preserved in its original historical form (not rebuilt into a pneumatic or electric instrument):
- Grand construction: The instrument has 4 manuals, more than 130 registers and just under 8,000 pipes.
- Acoustic delight: Music connoisseurs from all over the world come to enjoy its unique and powerful sound. Every September the cathedral hosts the International Organ Music Festival, and regular concerts take place throughout the summer.
